Pavarotti & Friends for Children of Liberia:
On June 9th 1998, the Spice Girls made their first official performance without Geri, on the event Pavarotti & Friends for Children of Liberia. Melanie commented about singing with Pavarotti:
“The concert’s in aid of children in Liberia, Africa, where there’s been a war going on for seven years. A lot of children have suffered terribly in this time – they’ve lost their parents and homes and been tortured – and many of them are mentally scarred. We feel very lucky to have sung with Luciano Pavarotti, one of the world’s greatest tenors, but most of all we’re glad that we can help out with the War Child charity.
Pavarotti originally wanted to sing a classical song with us, but we said: ‘That’s really not the Spice Girls! Why don’t you sing along with Viva Forever?’ When he heard it, he really loved it, so he agreed!
In the press conference before the show, I said: ‘If you think the Spice Girls don’t sound too good singing with Pavarotti, it’s because he had a word with us and asked us not to show him up! So, just to make him look good, we won’t be singing to the best of our abilities!’
It was really exciting to meet some of our idols, like Stevie Wonder, Natalie Cole and Celine Dion. Stevie Wonder said he’d like to work with us and Celine Dion came into our dressing room and asked if she could be a replacement for Geri! ‘Sorry, you just haven’t got the vocal ability!’ we joked.”
