  MEL'S FORMER SCHOOL FACES CLOSURE
Posted on 26/09/2007 by Luisa Damulakis

Fairfield High in Widnes faces closure as part of the government’s "Building Schools For The Future" plans.

Dwindling pupil numbers are among the factors for the axe with its roll dropping from 1,150 to 700 since 1999.

But today parents revealed they have contacted Sporty Spice, aka Melanie Chisholm, in a bid to highlight their campaign to save the academically-sound school, whose five A* to C GCSE pass rate rocketed from 36 to 46% this year.

The singer, who has rejoined her former bandmates for a Spice Girls reunion and world tour, attended the school from 1985 to 1990 and performed there during her solo days.

Campaigners hope securing such high profile support will add weight to the fight against plans to “federate” the school on the site of Wade Deacon High and close Fairfield within five years.

Lynne Parsons, whose son Liam, 13, attends Fairfield, said: “Its smaller class sizes mean it’s able to focus on personal development.

“We’ve got in touch with her management and we’re hopeful Mel will want to save it. The school, with its emphasis on performing arts and getting the best out of every child, has helped make Mel who she is.”

Barbara Charone, a PR representative for Mel, confirmed she had contacted the singer’s management about the parents’ campaign.

A source said: "For a laugh he has offered his advice to Victoria and the girls about their costumes. They thought it would be great fun for him to design some of their stage outfits." The clothes would all be black but themed, to match with their different personalities.

BBC X ITV:
Two big British networks have been fighting to get the girls on their shows. BBC hopes the fact that Emma Bunton has already participated on their reality show Strictly Come Dancing will help them get the girls to appear on the show. As for ITV, they are hoping to have a live broadcast from the girls' concert in London on their show X-Factor, as the dates coincide.

"Honestly, we can’t praise Mel C enough! We’ve been a big fan of Mel’s current solo album, which she released herself. And it’s good. Damn good!"
Perez called Mel an indie musician, commented that This Time is an anti-pop song in many ways and that the Spice Girls would have never released anything as earnest as this. He even complained about the single not being played in America! Check the page HERE.

Spice Girls at G-A-Y:
From Digital Spy:
The Spice Girls are rumoured to be planning to play a gig at London's famous G-A-Y club night.
A report in the Mirror claims that the "Spice Up Your Life" singers may be about to announce a date at the Astoria for the last weekend in November as a warm-up for their world tour.
The venue has announced it will be holding a special weekend of events on November 29 and 30 and hasn't ruled out an appearance from the girl-power pop group.
However, a spokesperson for the popstars has responded that the rumours are "inaccurate".

W.O.M.A.N. as the single:
The website New UK Single Releases has published that the Spice Girls' new single will be the unreleased track from Forever era, W.O.M.A.N., to be released on October 29th.

Jennifer Lopez as supporting act:
According to People.co.uk, Victorias's friend Jennifer Lopez would be the artist to open the Spice Girls' concerts in United States. Jennifer said: "I'd love to get back out there on tour and I'd really like to perform on the same stage as the Spice Girls. Even before we were friends, Posh was always my favourite."
A source close to the band added that the tour organisers want high profile supporting acts for the rest of the world tour, what would include the Scissor Sisters and Bjorn Again (an Abba tribute band).
The source says: "The girls want to appeal to all generations and produce a show that will go down in history. They have a hit-list of people they want and so far everyone is saying yes. They even joked about asking Robbie Williams (Geri Halliwell and Melanie Chisholm’s ex-boyfriend) to join them."

PICS FROM THE MAKING OF THIS TIME
Posted on 13/09/2007 by Luisa Damulakis
Official Site icon

From MelanieC.net:

Melanie shot the video for her new single "This Time" in London last week. Originally scheduled to be recorded last month, filming was cancelled due to the tragic death of director, Tim Royes, in a car accident. It was to have been Melanie's fourth collaboration with Tim, furthering the great relationship they had built up this year.

In such circumstances, it was important to Melanie to film the video with someone that knew Tim. RSA Films and director Adrian Moat stepped in to create, at a moment's notice, an amazing tribute to their friend and former colleague. The result is not only a beautiful video but also a wonderful dedication to the shining light that was Tim Royes.

A selection of images from the shoot can now be seen in the gallery section. The video will be updated in full next week.

Diana tribute single:
According to the People.co.uk the Spice Girls are recording a song called "Lady" to be released as a double a-side single with Woman. The song would be a tribute to Princess Diana and would include the lyrics: "Lady, you are an inspiration to us all, you made every woman stand so tall". Also according to the article, the girls would make a video for the track reflecting Diana's standing as a strong woman.
A source said: "They have always said how highly they thought of her and want to do something to pay their respects. Victoria in particular became the next big thing in the media after Diana and in some ways they feel guilty about that. Emma came up with the plan because she felt particularly guilty the girls were forced to turn down the chance to appear in the Concert for Diana earlier this summer due to her pregnancy. Geri was a huge fan and refers to Diana as the original Queen of Girl Power. She has been key in ensuring the single and video demonstrate that in a tasteful way."

News from EMI Brazil:
EMI Brazil has confirmed that the Megamix will be released in 15 days on the radios and that the Greatest Hits album will have three editions:
A simple one, with just the CD;
Another one with the CD + DVD;
And a limited edition with CD + DVD + a karaoke CD + a bracelet (this one won't be released at the same day as the other two editions).

Girls Aloud about the Spice Girls again:
Nicola Roberts from Girls Aloud told The Sun: "We've all registered for tickets. We were the Spice Girls generation and I can't believe that I'm now in the same industry as them. I loved them so much when I was younger that I used to go to Spice Girl parties. My nan used to make my costumes. Geri Halliwell was my favourite because she had red hair like me."

Kelly Osbourne speaks about the Spice Girls:
When asked if she will be at the finale of the X-Factor, TV show on which her mother, Sharon Osbourne, is a judge, Kelly responded: "It clashes with the Spice Girls concert. And there's no way I'm missing that. I've already told my mum 'fuck off'!"

  LUCIANO PAVAROTTI DIES
Posted on 06/09/2007 by Luisa Damulakis
General icon

Luciano Pavarotti, the Italian tenor who helped bring opera to the masses, died Thursday (September 6) at his home in Modena after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 71.

Pavarotti retired in 2004, but then embarked on a farewell tour in 2006. That same year he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and underwent surgery to have a tumor removed. The illness forced him to cancel his remaining performances, but his management had hoped the tenor would be able to resume the tour in 2007.

Pavarotti sang with the Spice Girls on the 1998's edition of the special Pavarotti & Friends, a few days after Geri Halliwell's departure from the band. The Italian verses added to the Viva Forever song made of this one of the most remarkable Spice Girls' performances.

The Pavarotti & Friends special in 1998 raised money for the children in Liberia, Africa, where there had been a war going on for seven years. Read Melanie's review of the concert in our Charity Works - 1998 section.

Melanie went to watch this year's Reading Festival and Closer magazine has published a cruel note about Melanie and the Razorlight vocalist's brother:

"Spice Girl Mel C has been spotted in the arms of a man who's not her boyfriend, says my spy. The man? Razorlight singer Johnny Borrell's brother Willy. My mole, who saw the pair in the Carling VIP tend at Reading Festival, said: 'They were hugging and holding hands.' Is Mel's romance with hunky property developer Thomas Starr over, then?"
