CURIOSITIES:
Announcement: One particularly interesting moment
in Melanie’s career was the trip to the traditional Cannes
Film Festival in France, to announce with the Spice Girls that they
were going to star in a movie. They got to the country just when
the Festival celebrated its 50th anniversary.
Audience: As the majority of the girls’ audience
was made of children and teenagers, they decided not to take a chance:
agreed to be the protagonists of the movie but they knew the plot
couldn’t be scandalous. Despite the fact the girls became
well known for being irreverent and for exploiting their own sexuality,
they couldn’t take part on a production with spicy scenes
or with a type of humor difficult for children to digest. Spice
World The Movie was received ever since the beginning as a harmless
comedy aimed at viewers with all ages.
Costs: $10, 000, 000
Income: $75, 000, 000
Location: Around 40 locations in London and Twickenham
Studios, amongst them:
- Loseley House
- Tower Bridge
- Royal Albert Hall
- Docklands
- Smithfield Central Market
- Hop Stock Market
- Buckingham Palace
- Battersea Park
- Westminster Abby
- Trafalgar Square
- Big Ben
Records: Spice World The Movie had the biggest
box office in England on its debut.
Spice World was the movie with the most celebrities co-starring
on.
Spice World was the 2nd most watched movie while showing in England.
First was Titanic.

from the viewers supporting her.
Ratings: on September 8th, the show had 1,9 million
viewers which means 8% of the British audience at that time –
TV Overnights.
CURIOSITIES:
The Invitation: Months
earlier, Cancer Research UK one of the many charities Melanie supports,
invited her to be on the show and she accepted. So Melanie had to
go through 6 days of training in different sports disciplines such
as hammer throwing, running, judo, speed skating, hurdles and swimming
together with other celebrities that would also be on the show.
Melanie’s chances to win were high as she has been trained
in sports ever since she was a child, what even got her the nickname
Sporty Spice when she joined the Spice Girls.
The accident: During the days Melanie spent at
the complex made especially so the celebrities could live together
in Sheffield, she got great results at the swimming, hurdles and
speed skating competitions. But on September 11th during the judo
fight against Miss World’s Azra Akin, Melanie fell badly and
suffered a rupture on the crucial ligament of her knee and an injury
on other two ligaments. She was urgently taken to Sheffield’s
Hospital, accompanied by her personal trainer, Matt Roberts. By
night Melanie recorded a message to the remaining participants of
the show and to the fans from the hospital’s bed, making it
clear that it was not Azra’s fault and that accidents happen.
The doctor Brian English from UK Athletics Chief Medical examined
her and declared at that night that Melanie was going to have a
surgery and a long process of recovery.
This was the message Mel sent to Azra from the hospital:
"Hi girls, it's me here. I just wanna say I'm absolutely fine,
so don't worry about me. Goodluck tonight and it's a good job I'm
not there, cause I would've kicked your asses. So good luck and
take care and please don't worry about me and Azra, I love you lots
and I don't want you to be worried about anything, accidents happen.
Aswell I would like to say big thank you to all the fans out there
and I'm fine you know. Thank you for all the support and I'll be
back on me feet in no time! See you later!"
The Surgery: Melanie's personal trainer Matt Roberts described
the injury as "serious and that had long-term ramifications."
A spokesperson for The Games said: "They were aware when they
went into this, as in any sporting event, there was a possibility
of this sort of eventuality, and they all went in with their eyes
wide open." The next day, on September 12th, Mel had a laparoscopic
surgery with surgeon Bickerstaff. He took out a piece of her hamstring
and inserted in her knee and had to reconstruct her knee using metals
a pair of staples and a screw. Melanie was admitted in Sheffield’s
hospital for 5 days and then taken straight to her mother’s
house in Liverpool, where she stayed for a month without being able
to move her leg.
