This Time is the fourth solo album, the seventh of Melanie’s career and the second released under her independent label: Red Girl Records.

With the success of First Day Of My Life in several European countries during 2005 and 2006, Melanie decided to bet on an album softer than Beautiful Intentions.

Apart from bringing the cover of the 80’s song I Want Candy, two more songs on This Time are covers: What If I Stay and Don’t Let Me Go, originally recorder by the co-writer Jill Jackson.

Continuing the works with young songwriter Adam Argyle (that had begun with Next Best Superstar, from Beautiful Intentions), a big part of This Time was written by him, who even sings with Melanie on the duet Don’t Let Me Go. Another highlight is the presence of Paul Gandler, the guitarist that has been working with Melanie since the first Spice Girls’ concert, co-writing Carolyna.

Melanie comments on Protected: "Well, the writing process for that song was unusual. Most of the time I sit down with one collaborator, starting with chord sequences, and the lyrics and melodies grow from there. That’s how most of my songs begin life, but this one already existed: Guy and Cathy had written the song, and I loved it, but I didn’t feel that the lyric was appropriate for me so I rewrote it."

For having a different pace from the rest of the album, I Want Candy appears as a bonus track. In the editions of some countries, First Day Of My Life was added to the tracklist also as a bonus.

Your Mistake has one of the most emotional lyrics of Melanie’s career: it’s about being the only child of parents who divorced and later started their own families.

James Bourne, member of the bands Son Of Dork and Busted co-wrote and played piano on the song Immune.

The original b-side of the single The Moment You Believe, Fragile, was included as a bonus track in the Portuguese edition of This Time. Later it was chosen to be in the Portuguese soap opera's soundtrack, Floribella.

Directed by Tim Royes, Melanie is in a place that reminds the backstage of a studio, with lots of elements of scenaries (lights, doors, cages, chains, a poster) and Melanie interacts with those objects while walking and singing. She seems to play with the lights during the video, feeling its power and deciding which ones to follow. Then she leaves the studio straight to the street. Pratically without close ups, the video has just one take and seems to be very simple, if it wasn't another video full of hidden messages from Melanie C! With lyrics inspired by the Romeo and Juliet classic, as told by Melanie in a few interviews, The Moment You Believe brings outstanding piano notes, usually played by Peter-John Vettese himself at promotional performances of the single.

The Moment You Believe was chosen as the German TV show Nur die Liebe Zählt advertisement song and as the soundtrack of the Portuguese soap opera, Ilha dos Amores.

The b-side Fragile is another work from Melanie and her guitarist Greg Hatwell (who also co-wrote Don’t Need This, from Beautiful Intentions).

Directed by Tom Royes, in a pink neon lights scenary, Melanie dances and strikes poses, wearing a black catsuit. For the first time in her solo career, she has a choreographed dance routine with lots of dancers: men wearing helmets and women with colorful dresses. The sexiest video ever released by Melanie until now also has scenes of her laying on a red puff and close ups on her mouth with pink lipstick while singing the song. Strangelove’s original in 1965, I Want Candy has had several covers since the 80’s: Bow Wow Wow, Aaron Carter and Good Charlotte have already made their own versions. With the release of the British comedy I Want Candy, starred by Carmen Electra and set for 2007, producer Barnaby Thompson, the same from Spice World, saw in Melanie the ideal singer to cover the song of the same name as the movie.

I Want Candy marks Melanie’s new attempt with the British market, after two years of promoting solely in the rest of Europe.

The single was poorly promoted in the UK, with Melanie also promoting The Moment You Believe in Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

I Want Candy was chosen for the soundtrack of the Portuguese series Morangos com Açúcar and Melanie took part of one episode, singing the song.

Directed by Tim Royes, Christina Chong plays Carolyna, an unhappy young girl with lots of problems, who starts to see Melanie C’s image in mirrors. Melanie also appears singing at the same party where Carolyna is dancing while her boyfriend flirts with another woman. At the end, when Carolyna is already on despair, trashing her own room, Melanie appears and holds out the hands to her, as a gesture of aid. When doing that gesture, Melanie shows the tattoos on both her wrists: Love and Happiness, in Tibetan writing. Click on the pictures to visit the Videography section:

Paul Gandler, the guitarist that has been working with Melanie since the first Spice Girls’ concert, co-wrote Carolyna.

Despite Melanie's gig in the Isle Of Wight festival and the Carolyna Week on the official MySpace, the single ended up being overshadowed by the return of the Spice Girls on June 28th, announcing a farewell tour for the end of the year.

The director of Melanie's latest three videos, Tim Royes, sadly died in a car accident in New York City on August 2007. Originally scheduled to be recorded in August, the filming of This Time video was cancelled due to the tragic happening. In such circumstances, it was important to Melanie to film the video with someone that knew Tim. The director Adrian Moat, Royes' former colleague was choosen to create this tribute to their friend. This Time shows Melanie following a ray of light, making allusion to life and death. Click on the pictures to visit the Videography section:

Melanie was asked to write and perform the trailer music for 2007's Pro7 Starforce campaign in Germany. In the previous year the song was written and performed by Take That.
Melanie's guitarist, Greg Hatwell, came up with an initial idea and he and Melanie finished writing the song together in June. The band went into the studio to record their parts at the end of that month and Melanie recorded her vocals on July 1st.
On July 4th, Melanie and the band flew to Salzburg in Austria to film the trailers. Filmed in an incredible glass aircraft hangar, they were surrounded by Lear jets, racing cars and motorbikes.
The trailer campaign started to be aired on German TV in early October.

Unfortunately, the alternative version of Understand that would be a b-side of the This Time single was replaced with the album version due to an error at the mastering studio. By the time this error was discovered it was too late to recall the stock. So Melanie and her team decided that the right thing to do was to make the song available for free download on her official website.

The single was overshadow in the UK with the leak of the Spice Girls' new song Headlines (Friendship Never Ends) on the web and its following debut on the radios on the same week of release of This Time. With Melanie promoting the Spice Girls' comeback at the same time as the single This Time on radios, magazines and TV, all the attention went to the Spice Girls.
